Week 7 - People Are Strange by The Doors

 The Doors (album) - Wikipedia

As a huge fan of the doors, I'm super excited to do this week's blog post on them! I actually didn't even expect to see them on this week's list so when I did I decided to do another one of their songs which I think is much better than the one given. One of the reasons I like The Doors so much is because of Jim Morrison's lyrical genius and the one-of-the-kind pianist Ray Manzarek whose skill on the keyboard can be heard quite clearly in this song, People are Strange. After the begging of the first verse of lyrics, the keyboard comes in and instantly makes the song a great and catchy one. I feel like it's the keys of the lyrics that are the best part of this song because they're both so unique and instantly recognizable. As I said before, one of the best things about The Doors is their lyrics and that is all due to Jim Morrison, the band's lead singer, songwriter, and poet. Jim Morrison actually went to UCLA, earned a degree, and was even recorded to have an IQ of 149; we can actually see his genius in the lyrics he writes. If you listen to any of the Doors' songs, try to think of them as poems as well as lyrics and you'll see them in a whole new light. Anyway, back to People are Strange. At first, the lyrics can seem a little strange themselves: "people are strange when you're a stranger" and "faces look ugly when you're alone," but these lyrics describe an experience that many people have felt. This is the feeling of being alienated from others and thinking how strange they can seem when you yourself are strange. In my opinion, this song is like insecurity personified; when you're alone and unwanted, people look ugly because you have so much hate in your heart towards yourself and them for making you feel alone. I think that this song is just a glimpse into what The Doors are really about, if you're interested I suggest listening deeper into their music and I think your idea of music just might expand a little.

  1. Hi Sofia! I am not very familiar with The Door’s repertoire, but I really liked the song that we listened to in class. That is so cool that Jim Morrison was able to show his genius through his music and his lyrics. I’ll have to listen to some more of their music because they sound really awesome! Good job on your blog:)
