Week 11 - U.N.I.T.Y. by Queen Latifah
Okay so, I've never been a big fan of 80's rap because it just didn't really hit the way I wanted it but to be fair I had never heard a female rapper before. It was always Tupac or Biggie and while they were good and I liked a couple of their songs, 80s rap wasn't my go-to. After I heard Queen Latifah however, my eyes and ears were opened to the genre and I actually found myself wanting to listen to more artists like her. From the beginning to the end of the song "U.N.I.T.Y." I was completely focused on the lyrics and that amazing Saxophone that could be heard throughout the whole song. Seriously, that Sax had me already adding the song to my phone. The lyrics too were really good. After listening to it three times and reading the lyrics through a couple I realized that the lyrics deliver a really powerful and heart-moving message. She raps about how men treat her like an object and don't treat her with respect simply because she's a woman and they think that she's inferior to them because of it. I found myself sort of cheering her on in my heart; I felt like this was her way of telling men that she isn't lesser than them simply because she's a woman but that she is in fact equal to them no matter what they think. I'm definitely going to be listening to more of her music after listening to this awesome song.
I feel similarly to you, while I always enjoyed the groove of 80s rap, there has always been a slight disconnect because it can be hard to listen to what was primarily men talk down on women as much as they did. Of course it wasn’t all male rappers of the time, but Queen Latifah acts as a great voice for women of the time and she really makes you want to listen to what she has to say.
ReplyDeleteI thought this song was really good too! It had an infectious tempo that gave it a really good energy, and the lyrics were really powerful. It’s interesting how artists started branching out with controversial topics in their music around this time. I think Queen Latifa was very influential with her musical statements.
