Let me just start by saying how much I absolutely adore Ella Fitzgerald and her music. She is, in my opinion, essential to the genre of vocal jazz in her time and I listen to her today and still think she's one of the best artists in the genre. Her vocals are unlike any other and when she's paired with Armstrong they make an impressive duo that has been known to make memorable songs. I chose to go away from the list because I felt that Ella Fitzgerald had much better songs in the same time period than the ones that were on it. Dream and Little Dream of Me is one such song that was very well known in its time and is still known today by many. This song pairs Armstrong's iconic trumpet playing and his own vocals with Fitzgerald's smooth and dreamy voice to create a wonderful song with a complex duet of rough and smooth. My favorite parts of this song are Fitzgerald's voice; when Armstrong sings and she's doing a velvety call and response like harmony with him, I can't help but sing along with her. The lyrics too are great and fun to sing along to, I seriously recommend anyone who likes oldies to listen to this song because it is truly a standard of its time and genre.
Sofia, I too love Ella Fitzgerald and her vocals, and "Dream a Little Dream of Me" has long been one of my favorite songs. I feel that the contrast of her voice with Louis Armstrong's makes the song so much better. It's something you can easily hum along to or casually enjoy. I'm glad you were able to find a song off the list that you are able to enjoy this much!
ReplyDeleteI had actually never listened to this song or heard of Ella Fitzgerald, but she is just as amazing as you say! Her voice is so dreamy and the combination of the her voice and the trumpet is beautiful. I didn't listen to much jazz before this class but I love it now!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked it!
DeleteI thought you did an amazing job and I really like the way your blog is set up. I agree with you Ella Fitzgerald is amazing at what she did. I also thought that was really cool that she and Louis Armstrong teamed and made some great material. I must say this was well done.
